DIY BUCKET TEST

WHAT IS A BUCKET TEST?

A bucket test is a simple and effective method used to determine whether a swimming pool is losing water due to normal evaporation or a leak in the pool system. It helps pool owners distinguish between typical water loss and a more serious issue that might require repair.

HOW TO PERFORM A BUCKET TEST

1. Fill the Pool:
Make sure your pool is filled to its normal operating level.

2. Get a Bucket:
Use a clean 5-gallon plastic bucket.

3. Fill the Bucket:
Fill the bucket about ¾ full with water from the pool.

4. Place the Bucket in the Pool:
Set the bucket on a pool step or shallow ledge. Adjust it so the water level inside the bucket matches the water level of the pool outside the bucket.

5. Mark the Water Levels:

  • Inside the Bucket: Mark the water level with tape or a waterproof marker.
  • Outside the Bucket: Mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket.

6. Wait 24 Hours:
Leave the pool undisturbed (no swimming or refilling) for 24 hours.

7. Compare the Water Levels:

  • If both water levels dropped equally, the loss is due to evaporation.
  • If the pool water level dropped more than the bucket, it likely indicates a leak.

NEXT STEP IF A LEAK IS SUSPECTED

 1. Check for Visible Leaks

Before calling in a pro, perform a visual inspection of common problem areas:

  • Pool Liner: Look for tears, bubbles, or wrinkles.

  • Skimmers and Returns: Inspect for cracks or gaps around fittings.

  • Pump and Filter: Check for dripping or pooling water around the equipment.

  • Plumbing Lines: Look for wet spots, soggy ground, or unusual water flow near underground pipes.

2. Call a Professional

If the bucket test confirms a leak but you can’t find the source:

  • Hire a pool leak detection specialist.

  • These professionals use tools like pressure testing, dye tests, and acoustic sensors to pinpoint hidden leaks without damaging your pool.
